See Friedrich Nikolai's travel-log in its original form in German right below, note that the language appears a bit peculiar by today’s standards.  Great care has been taken to maintain Nikolai's sentence structures in the English translation to convey the feeling of the original and to underscore a very important point about the life and times of FXM which the translator is making.  This adherence to Nikolai's original sentence structures accounts for some of the awkwardness of the English language in the translation of this page.
